How to Clean a Mattress?

Although we regularly strip our bed sheets and wash them, we do forget what is more important – the mattress. It is capable of abhorring dust, mites and dead skins which build-ups, and can lead to allergies and illness. In most homes, mattress is the number culprit of allergens, so it is very important for us to learn how to clean the object on which we have our beauty sleep.



How to clean a Mattress with Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and Vinegar are very effective and simple to use cleaning agents. There used as solutions to many cleaning problems, from removing odours to unclogging drains. We can apply these powerful agents in cleaning our mattresses with the following steps:

Step One

Remove all beddings and wash them in hot water to kill germs and mites. Add 1/2 – 1 cup of vinegar to remove bad odours and soften the beddings. As extra insurance, press the sheets with iron to ensure there are no germs left.

Step Two

Sprinkle 1 – 3 cups of baking soda on the mattress to absorb the odour and let it sit for not less than 30 minutes – giving it more time is okay, but if you are in a rush, 30 minutes is okay. If the mattress has not been cleaned in a long time or have a very bad smell, sprinkle even more baking soda especially on the areas that have the bad smell. Using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum, clean the seams and folds in the mattress to remove dirt and dust and the baking soda.

Step Three

Ensure the mattress is completely dry before putting any beddings on it, as any moisture can encourage the growth of microorganisms.

Note: If there’s any stain on the mattress, make sure you treat it before applying the baking soda.


How to remove Urine Odour & How to clean a mattress that has been urinated on

Urine smell can be quite messy, irritating. With the following few simple steps, it will disappear in no time.

  • Mix 2tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1 cup of diluted hydrogen peroxide
  • Apply the solution on the mattress with a clean towel or spray bottle
  • Leave it to sit for 24 hours, after which you can vacuum it, to remove the baking soda
  • If the odour persists, repeat the process. Vinegar is also quite useful in removing the odour.
